Description Jeffrey Stedfast 2005-08-02 21:20:32 UTC
don't duplicate ui, it confuses the user

Other information:
message attachments appear both in the free-flowing message body AND in the
attachment bar - this is a huge waste of space and also confusing to the user.
Comment 1 Jeffrey Stedfast 2005-08-02 21:26:52 UTC
Nat's big UI push for CODE10 was to remove duplicate UI/functionaility in
GNOME/Evolution as study after study has shown that this only results in
confusing users. we are taking a HUGE step backwards in this regard with this
new attachment UI.
Comment 2 Srinivasa Ragavan 2005-08-03 05:44:57 UTC
Jeff,
we arent literally duplicating the UI. One is the bar where you access
attachments similiar to file icons and other is the inline view the same. Though
u can save/ dnd from either place. I guess the same idea evolved from the
discussion on e-h list with nat/dobey and others.
Comment 3 Srinivasa Ragavan 2005-08-05 05:57:47 UTC
We should sure look at it in more better way. Im moving to future.

Comment 5 Antoine Pitrou 2005-10-08 23:43:00 UTC
Hi,

as mentioned in #318301, the problem with the attachment "bar" beneath the
headers is that most of the time it is triggered by "false" attachments. For
example I am subscribed to some mailing-lists where nearly every message has its
footer attached instead of appended to the body (probably because the ML engine
does not like managing different charsets).
So it's very annoying to have this attachment bar prominently displayed in those
cases.
Comment 6 Srinivasa Ragavan 2005-10-11 02:40:58 UTC
Antoine, ill look into it. But as andre said by specs those are attachments.
Comment 7 Antoine Pitrou 2005-10-11 13:09:26 UTC
By the way, here is the source for such a message. It could be simple to detect
message parts which have a Content-Type of "text/*" and a Content-Disposition of
"inline", and decide that they are not to be considered as true attachments.
After all "inline" means just that, exactly like the difference between and in HTML.

Bumping version to a stable release.
Comment 9 Matthew Barnes 2008-03-29 14:39:37 UTC
Is this bug still valid?
Comment 10 Jeffrey Stedfast 2008-03-29 15:03:43 UTC
this can be closed as far as I'm concerned
Comment 11 Matthew Barnes 2008-03-29 16:35:44 UTC
Cool, thanks Jeff. Closing as OBSOLETE.
Comment 12 Antoine Pitrou 2008-03-31 20:15:35 UTC
Hi,

It's probably not the same bug as described in the report, but my remarks in comments #5 and #7 are still valid (for Evolution 2.12 though - I'm waiting for the Mandriva packages to stabilize before I upgrade). Should I open another entry for that?
