GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 312215
negative numbers in parenthesis not recognised as numeric.
Last modified: 2005-08-01 20:55:32 UTC
Please describe the problem: Entering negative numbers or currency values, with the negative sign indicated by parenthesis, can result in a string rather than a number in the cell. No mathmatical operations will work with the cell. Formatting the cell, either before or after entry, via 'Format/Cells/Number [Number or Currency) to (3210.21) format doesn't help. Steps to reproduce: 1. Type the following characters into a worksheet cell- (123.456.78) or alternately ($123,456.78). 2. Create a CSV file with the above characters and import it into a spreadsheet. 3. Copy and paste some numbers from a web page, or another application with negative numbers displayed in parenthesis. Actual results: The negative numbers in parenthesis are stored on the worksheet as strings, making it impossible to do math with them. They are left-justified, while numbers are right-justified. Formatting the cell via the format menu doesn't help. The workaround is to edit the number and remove the parenthesis, add a minus sign to define it as a negative value, then do Format/Cells/Number (3210.21). T Expected results: The spreadsheet should recognise the string as a negative number, and format it according to the current cell definition for numbers or currency. Does this happen every time? Yes Other information: This should work with direct entry, data import, and pasting from the clipboard.
