Description Nick Smith 2005-07-13 13:15:01 UTC
For some reason, each time you start up the GIMP, it defaults to a directory
that is weird and not where any of my files are. When I save a file, I have to
do it all over again. It would be nice to be able to have the GIMP "remember"
the last directory in which you opened and saved a file to. This also includes
remembering them while running the program as well even if the two are different.

Examples:
1. I open up the GIMP after installing it. I open a file at directory A within
the My Documents folder. I then save the file into a subdirectory of directory
A, or directory B. I open up the next file which defaults to directory A then
make some small modifications. I then save the file, defaulting to directory B
(as of now, it defaults to directory A), and save it to directory B.
2. I then close the GIMP, do some other things, then reopen the GIMP after
noticing a problem with an image I saved a long time ago which isn't on the
recent list. When I try to open the file, it sets the default directory to
directory A, the directory I last used to open a file with. I fix the mistake I
noticed then save the file in which the default save directory is directory B.

This way, it's far more convenient. Also, I like the older saving interface
where you can choose the folder to save to right away without having to keep on
clicking on the plus sign to choose the directory to save to. Perhaps
remembering this setting as well would be nice.

There's quite some logic in the current behaviour, while I fail to see such
logic in your proposal.

Remembering the location between invocations of the program doesn't make any
sense. If you want to change the default directory, that's as easy as changing
the current working directory before starting gimp. Also, there's a recent
documents list (in GIMP and probably also in your desktop). You should consider
to use that if you need to reopen a recently used image.

The save dialog is initialized with the current filename, so of course it opens
in the directory where the image was opened from. Everything else would be
arbitrary.

We discussed this lately on the mailing-list and there seems to be a workflow
where a change in the behaviour would be convenient. That's when you are working
on a sequence of files in one folder and want to save the results in a different
folder. It would be nice to have a detailed proposal for a user interface that
supports this workflow. It shouldn't interfere with the default behaviour
though. I am closing this report as WONTFIX. If you want to open a new one,
proposing changes to improve the handling of a sequence of images, please do so.
