GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 309846
Keyboard focus doesn't go to folder-selection window with CTRL-SHIFT-V
Last modified: 2005-08-02 17:03:54 UTC
Distribution/Version: Gentoo In evolution 1.4, if you hit CTRL-SHIFT-V to move a message to a folder, the window that pops up to select the folder gets the keyboard focus, allowing you to move messages without touching the mouse. In Evolution 2.2.1.1, the focus doesn't change, making moving of messages without the mouse impossible. (Yes, some window managers will mask this by automatically giving focus to new windows, but with pointer focus, that doesn't help.)
works fine here (metacity-2.8.0-3 on gnome2.6 and suse9.2), which window manager do you use exactly? please reopen the bug when answering. also try upgrading to evo-2.2.3 if possible.
I'm using the "official distributed-with-X" window manager: twm. :) It's in pointer-focus mode. Conveniently, I see that Gentoo has a new Evolution ebuild for 2.2.3, so I'll upgrade and report back.
Nope. Still not working. I select a message. The mouse is in the main (only) evolution window, and the active sub-window is the list of messages. (I'm off on the terminology, but if you hit up or down arrow, it goes to a different message in the same folder.) Then I hit CTRL-SHIFT-V. A new window pops up with a list of all folders. My window manager places this window randomly (in 1.4, it is placed at +0+0). Assuming it doesn't happen to pop up where the pointer is, arrow keys continue to change the selected message instead of selecting a destination folder.
Not able to reproduce with metacity-2.8.1-0.1 and evolution-2.0.4 or evolution-2.2.x. And not able to reproduce with metacity-2.10.0-5 and evolution-2.3.x either.
peter, this is stricly a window manager issue. your window manager is honouring your setting, i.e. it is focusing ONLY the window DIRECTLY beneath the pointer. to do anything else wouldn't be what you asked it to do. this just demonstrates one of the many stupid problems with X window managers vs toolkits, etc.
[Preston, not Peter] Yes, my window manager is set to pointer focus, but my point was that in 1.4, Evolution sent the keystrokes for the move pop-up, regardless of the window manager. I can see an argument for this being wrong. I can also see an argument for this being a configuration option. Regardless, the current behavior simply lacks the intuitive feel of the 1.4 user interface.
