This bug was originally reported in the Debian BTS: http://bugs.debian.org/304574

According to the Using the Status Notification Area section of the
GNOME HIG 2.0:

 Double-click or Space key should perform the icon's default
 action. Normally this should open a window with relevant data ...

However, when there is only one action on click, it doesn't make any sense to
force a double-click.
