Do you have totem-xine installed ? I have the same bug and it seems to be in totem-xine. ( I didn't found duplicate) I suggest to reassign this bug to totem, altought nautilus should not crash, even using a buggy program.
I have totem installed, and it crash when opening files too. I tryed to remove it, but there's dependence with ubuntu-desktop.
So it must be totem-gstreamer and it's not related to xine. Do this happens with all avi file ? If not, could you please attach the incriminated file to this bug ? In any case, could you provide a trace of this bug ? ( http://live.gnome.org/GettingTraces on how to do it ). Packages with debugging enabled are available for Ubuntu Hoary on http://people.ubuntu.com/~seb128/hoary_dbgdebs/ . You can install them (for example totem and gstreamer) by downloading them all to a folder. Then cd to this folder and type : "sudo dpkg -i *"
ubuntu-desktop depends on totem which is totem-gstreamer | totem-xine, so it can be both. There is a such bug happening with totem-gstreamer if you don't have the handler for the files (ie: avi files without ffmpeg). Can you reply to the question from the previous command ?
After uninstalling totem-gstreamer, and using totem-xine, the problem disappear. I tried to reinstall gstreamer (with debugging enable) and no more crash. I have uninstall totem-xine, and reinstalling totem and gstreamer-totem to reproduce the crash, but now i can view the avi or mpeg properties. I still have a problem while launching totem, but it's an another story.
I'm closing the bug so, feel free to reopen if you get the issue again.
*** Bug 302764 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Reopened because someone else has the bug (302764).
Marking needinfo till we get a complete stack.
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/27376 has a more complete backtrace with 2.12.1.
It's a totem/gstreamer issue in any case, reassigning.
(Mass-closing of GStreamer-0.8 related Totem bugs) Thanks for the bug report. However, the version you are using is no longer maintained. Please upgrade to the most recent version and open a new bug if the problem persists with a current Totem/GStreamer-0.10 version. (Stack trace in launchpad isn't particularly useful either I'm afraid).
