Description Ross Boylan 2003-07-22 21:52:44 UTC
Description of Problem:
When using evolution remoted via X windows, there are some problems with
the display on the remote (from evolution's point of view) machine.
1. When I try to send a message, the main box for entering text is
blank--that is, there is no widget there. There is nothing to type into,
and so no way to send a message.

2. I show a tree view of folders on the left hand pane. The order seems
random, and is not alphabetical.

Neither problem exists when running locally.

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. evolution 1.2.4 running on Solaris 2.8
2. shut down (exit) local copy (however I didn't do oafslay or anything
like that).
3. use ssh -X from system running Debian Gnu/Linux with XFree86 4.2.1
4. start evolution.
5. notice the folder view is scrambled.
6. compose or reply to a message
7. there is no widget to type in.

Actual Results:
scrambled folder view.
nowhere to type message.

Expected Results:
alphabetical folder view.
colored window in which I can type message (and original message shows if a
reply).

How often does this happen?

every time

Additional Information:

After experiencing the problems I tried again locally, and everything was fine.

I attempted to file this bug from within evolution, but it crashed. If the
bug got out first, this one might be a duplicate.

Sorry, I know this is kind of two bugs.

Note this renders evolution unusable for sending mail from my remote system.

this is a bug in oafd, which is using your old DISPLAY environment and
so when you launch a new evo, some of the components get launched with
the env that oafd is running under, which means they are displayed to
the wrong screen.

upgrade to 1.4.3 or else make sure to `oaf-slay` before running evo on
a remote display so that when oafd gets respawned, it has the right
display env.
Comment 2 Ross Boylan 2003-07-23 19:06:32 UTC
Thank you for the information about oaf-slay. I'm not sure if 1.4 is
available on Sun yet.

However, using oaf-slay fixes the first problem (no widget to type in
message) but not the second (sort order of folders).

It's very peculiar that this should differ depending upon how I run
the program.

It might be appropriate to reopen this bug, the the remaining problem
is not that severe.
Comment 3 Jeffrey Stedfast 2003-07-23 19:11:48 UTC
ah, I missed that problem... that has to do with the locale
environment afaik.

anyways, the shell component is what manages the folder list so I'll
reassign.

Doesn't seem to be an issue in 1.4.5
