Description Eugene O'Connor 2003-06-25 10:12:46 UTC
In the Compose a message dialog, and in the Properties: Paragraph dialog
there are lists of available header styles, as follows:

Compose a message dialog, Format > Heading menu
- Normal
- Preformat
- Bulleted List
- Roman Numeral List
- Numbered List
- Alphabetical List
- Header 1
- Header 2
- Header 3
- Header 4
- Header 5
- Header 6
- Address

Properties: Paragraph dialog
- Normal
- Pre
- Header 1
- Header 2
- Header 3
- Header 4
- Header 5
- Header 6
- Address
- Dot item
- Number item
- Roman item
- Alphabeta item

These lists should be identical in both places, to avoid confusing the
user.

Also, some of the style names are misleading (for example header and
heading are different in HTML). I think it would be useful if these lists
followed HTML terminology more closely. I suggest something like this:

- Normal
--------separator--------
- Heading 1
- Heading 2
- Heading 3
- Heading 4
- Heading 5
- Heading 6
--------separator--------
- Bulleted List
- Alphabetic List
- Numbered List
- Roman Numeral List
--------separator--------
- Address
- Preformatted

It might also be useful to make submenus, as follows:

- Headings > Heading 1
             Heading 2
             Heading 3
             Heading 4
             Heading 5
             Heading 6

- Ordered List > Alphabetic
                 Numbered
                 Roman Numerals

Hi Eugene,

Thank you for filing this. It is much to my chagrin that we are still
finding these embarassing bugs after three years of polishing the app,
but, such is the way of software development, I suppose. :)

I am setting the target milestone for this to be 1.6. (Mostly so that
it will show up in our planning queries.. I am sure that I can have it
fixed before then.)

I agree with you that the inconsistency between the two option menus
is problematic, and that we would be well advised to use menuitem
names which more accurately map to their associated HTML tags. As for
your suggestions about reordering, I shall focus on making sure that
related menuitems are grouped together, and that it is easily apparent
which options may be used in plain text *and* html mode, and which are
only relevent to html. At the moment I'm feeling less than excited
about introducing submenus, since they complicate menuitem selection.

At any rate, I will get back to you soon with a patch.

Thanks, Anna
