When I'm reading a message that come from a list and click on reply
button evolution send a reply-to original sender, not to the list. We
have to select "reply to list" from "action menu" to reply to the list.

I remember that the original evolution has this default behavior.
Comment 4 Jeffrey Stedfast 2003-02-19 04:55:40 UTC
uh... there is no reply-to-list on the toolbar

you are hitting reply-to-*all*
Comment 5 Gabriel de Perthuis 2005-02-20 01:19:23 UTC
I'd like to reopen this, albeit for a different reason:
The Ctrl+R shortcut and the toolbar button should be reply to list by
default when the message is from a list, since it is by far the msot
common case.
The toolbar button could be made into a multi-button (like the “new”
button).
Comment 6 Not Zed 2005-02-21 04:55:30 UTC
reply to all is far more common for me. so you can't just say it is
more common to reply to list (i never use it, ever).

i dont think this will ever get changed

Comment 7 André Klapper 2005-07-13 21:54:28 UTC
still valid in 2.3.4
Comment 8 Mikel Ward 2005-08-24 10:04:05 UTC
I really want some kind of sane, easy reply to list functionality, preferably as
a toolbar icon. Having a capability that is difficult to find, not available as
a contextual action, and not mouse accessible to me defeat the primary reason
for using a graphical application.

The clear preference is for "Reply All" or "Reply Group" to reply to a list.

A fallback option is to add a separate "Reply List" button (bug 309690), but
that was WONTFIXED.

Not Zed,
On mailing lists, there is in my opinion seldom a good reason to send a message
with the original poster as the "To" and the list as the "CC" since the poster
is typically subscribed to the list. I know I don't like getting duplicate
messages when I post to a list. I would welcome some further comment on what
you usually do when replying to a mailing list and why you believe your behavior
is the preferred one.
Comment 9 Mikel Ward 2005-08-24 22:45:47 UTC
We need one of:
Bug 244791 (Support for Mail-Followup-To header)
Bug 234608 (Add "Reply to List" to the toolbar)
Bug 238200 (change reply to all to reply to list)
Bug 309690 (need toolbar, context menu entries for reply to list)

to make mailing lists not suck in Evolution, but they're all marked as (or
headed for) WONTFIX.

It's probably true that the people most likely to care enough to advocate these
fixes are also the ones with a background in a text-mode mailer such as Mutt or
Gnus, and can thus be contented with only a keyboard shortcut, but I really
don't think that's good enough in a graphical mailer.

Requested at https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/33830 as well.
Comment 11 manuel soto 2006-03-23 14:26:59 UTC
This BUG was posted at 2003-02-17. I decided to move to kmail 2 years ago and trust me that I'm very happy w/ this software. You may find all Evolution's functionality plus it recognize list as a expected, not only reply to list by default, you may have several identities and then select the from account to use in your list folders, just press "r" or "l" and that's all flaks.
No more rejections because the from is not subscribe
   No more private mail exposition
No more peoples not complaining to receive emails direct to their personales accounts

kmail works on gnome too.

P.D.
I conserve my hopes of which evolution and the rest of which they do not support lists of suitable form someday does it

Bumping version to a stable release.
Comment 13 Denny de la Haye 2008-10-31 09:37:33 UTC
Another vote here for a contextually-available 'reply to list' button on the toolbar. IMHO the most sensible way to add this to the UI would be for the 'reply all' button to become a 'reply to list' button when list headers are detected... there's _very_ rarely any reason to reply to the original poster AND the list, people only do it because they don't have a reply-to-list button.
Comment 14 Denny de la Haye 2008-10-31 11:54:16 UTC
It would also be nice if 'reply' became 'reply to sender'* at the same time - then the function of both buttons would be clear and distinct.

* going to 'reply to' if that's not the list-post address, and 'from' if 'reply-to' matches 'list-post' (i.e. has been munged)
Comment 15 André Klapper 2010-03-14 00:01:45 UTC
Use Control+L.

What is this report about?
The original request is WONTFIX.
Is this now about having an icon in the toolbar?
Comment 16 Denny de la Haye 2010-03-14 00:15:28 UTC
"Use Control+L."

Way to miss the point of every person who has replied to this. Comment #9 explicitly addressed this unhelpful non-solution, presumably because they knew it was inevitably going to be suggested by someone sooner or later.

A frequently-used feature only being accessible via keyboard shortcut is not really optimal in a GUI application.

"Is this now about having an icon in the toolbar?"

As clearly stated above by several people, this bug is requesting that when list headers are detected, one of the reply buttons on the menu bar should be 'reply to list'. That's what it's always been about.

Further to that requirement, I think there is a majority of comments in favour of achieving this by changing the 'reply to all' button into a 'reply to list' button at such times, as you don't usually need 'reply to all' when you're replying to a list email (other than that people currently use it because the more suitable 'reply to list' is not available to them as a button).
Comment 17 André Klapper 2010-03-14 01:01:33 UTC
(In reply to comment #16)
> when list headers are detected, one of the reply buttons on the menu bar
> should be 'reply to list'.

Changing icons in the toolbar dynamically is not allowed by the Human Interafce Guidelines. Greying out is an option.

Again, changing the Reply to All button to Reply to List in case of detecting mailinglist headers is not allowerd by the HIG.
Comment 18 Denny de la Haye 2010-03-14 01:12:12 UTC
Hrm, I see. Okay, so the options are adding another button, which I can understand a reluctance to do (and has been WONTFIXed before as bug 234608), or maybe the suggestion from comment #5 for the second reply button (currently reply to all) to be a multi-function button instead, similar to the 'new' button. The default behaviour of that button does change contextually, so presumably that's something which is allowed by the interface guidelines.

Are there any other options you can think of to present a GUI user with one-click access to the reply to list feature when reading a list email?
Comment 19 Akhil Laddha 2010-07-30 08:00:55 UTC
I think these fixes should help which add 'group reply' in toolbar. Group reply has two options reply to all and reply to list.

Cool! Never thought I'd see this bug actually addressed!! Is that first patch accepted, or does it have to go through an approval process first? I vote for it! :)
Comment 21 Matthew Barnes 2010-07-30 10:07:02 UTC
Closing this as obsolete since the issues was solved under bug #624204.
