Look at any icon for a background with alpha channel. A good example is
http://art.gnome.org/backgrounds/gnome/32/ wich is next to invisible.

A standard background like in the Gnome splash screen contest page would be a
wast improvement.

The only problem with using a standard colour is that people may believe that 
is the actual colour of the background. Perhaps a chequered pattern may be 
better?
