GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 171793
window list shows current desktop windows in alternate color or the like
Last modified: 2006-05-23 15:14:15 UTC
The window lists can be toggled to show windows from all desktops or only from the current. It would be a nice usability feature if it would be visually visible which windows are available on the current desktop and which are located at others (when "Show windows from all desktops" is checked). I suggest those window-buttons of other desktops could be dimmed or the text was dimmed. Other information:
Dimming would be confusing since that's what we use for minimized windows. We'd need a different method.
Dimming the icon color is used. Dimming the entire button/colouring it differently isn't used. Another way is to sort the windows based on the desktop they appear on in combination with some other visual indication.
Dimming the entire button or coloring it differently I believe would suffer from the same theme problems as button flashing (see bug 150594). The window selector applet sorts windows according to the desktop they are on. It's possible we could do something similar for the tasklist. Or, we could massively simplify libwnck and get rid of nasty edge cases by nuking the ability to show windows from all desktops in the tasklist since the selector handles it (and maybe we could nuke the nasty grouping stuff at the same time)... </rant>

Ideas from bug 319336: Windows from other workspaces should be visualized differently than windows in current workspace in "Show all windows" mode: - Windows from other workspaces should be rendered differently - with different background or font color (or with font in italic) and/or flashed-out icon. - Tooltip should also show name of workspace (or even flash the window in workspace switcher applet). - Maybe also smaller maximal width can be used sometimes.
I think we should sort windows in the tasklist by workspace, with nice big bars inbetween to make the windows on various workspaces visually distinct. I was almost certain we had an older bug already filed for that, but I only see one that was just recently filed. Anyway I'm going to mark as a duplicate of that one. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 342696 ***
