GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 166474
Redo should be Shift+Ctrl+Z i.s.o Ctrl+Y
Last modified: 2008-01-15 12:47:21 UTC
According to the GNOME HIG http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/hig/2.0/menus-standard.html#menu-standard-edit undo should be Shift+Ctrl+Z
You of course mean Redo rather than Undo. This is an issue that has already been discussed, and while these sorts of things are always difficult, the consensus was that it is better in this instance not to follow the HIG. (Among other factors, the usage of Ctrl-Y in GIMP matches Mozilla and most Windows apps.) See bug #92468. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 92468 ***
I indeed meant redo I don't really see why you are closing this bug. Firefox already uses Shift+Ctrl+Z on Linux and probably the other mozilla products will follow. Furthermore GIMP is a native GNOME app so IMHO following GNOME guidelines is more important than windows guidelines. Maybe the best option is to make the keymaps platform dependent.
First of all, GIMP is not a GNOME application. Secondly, we have discussed the undo/redo keybindings in all the possible detail and we are not going to change them again anytime soon. Do you want me to change the resolution of your report to WONTFIX instead?
Actually, the HIG people signalled that they are willing to change the HIG-suggested Redo keybinding to Ctrl-Y. Perhaps they should finally do that before more applications change to the akward Ctrl-Shift-Z...
OK, just was trying to help.
We appreciate it, and please don't be discouraged from making other suggestions. This one just happens to touch on a subject that has already been argued to death.
