Description Gabriel Burt 2005-01-16 00:46:28 UTC
Please describe the problem:
When downloading a video (mpg) to the Desktop, gnome-video-thumbnailer is using
near 100% CPU, and the icon representing the file on the Desktop cycles between
a document image with a clock in the middle of it to a screenshot-thumbnail.

Note that this bug doesn't happen when downloading to other directories.

Steps to reproduce:
1. cd ~/Desktop/
2. wget
http://www.archive.org/download/plow_that_broke_the_plains/plow_that_broke_the_plains.mpg
3. watch cpu go to 100%, thumbnails get repeatedly generated

Download a Bittorrent mpg file (eg
http://www.torrentocracy.com/files/torrents/bush-we_will_not_have_an_all_volunteer_army.mpg.torrent)
2. Watch gnome-video-thumbnailer go to 100% and repeatedly generate thumbnails
during download
3.

Actual results:
CPU at 100% during most of download (eg 10 min+)
Thumbnails repeatedly generated for file

Expected results:
Either generate one thumbnail of the video and stick with it or wait till the
file isn't being downloaded to generate one.

Does this happen every time?
Yes, assumming the download is going directly to the Desktop and not first into
/tmp/

you don't have the issue if you download in /tmp with a nautilus' window open on
/tmp ?
Comment 2 Gabriel Burt 2005-01-16 19:23:18 UTC
I tried it again under several scenarios. Downloading by the above method to
/tmp/ or ~/ does not cause this bug to happen. Only when I downloaded to
~/Desktop/ does it happen, regardless of whether I have a nautilus window open
to ~/Desktop. I believe that the bug is in the code that differs between
displaying files in a nautilus window and displaying them on the Desktop, as
other folders seem to operate normally.
Comment 3 Sebastien Bacher 2005-01-16 19:51:32 UTC
you don't answer to the question. Does it happen if you have a nautilus window
open on /tmp while you download in /tmp ? The desktop is display all the time so
that's normal that happens, what about an other dir if nautilus is open on it ?
Comment 4 Gabriel Burt 2005-01-16 20:02:23 UTC
Sorry, I did indeed have nautilus windows browsing the /tmp/ and ~/ directories
when doing these tests.
Comment 5 Sebastien Bacher 2005-01-16 20:06:32 UTC
and the thumbnails are not refreshed ?
Comment 6 Gabriel Burt 2005-01-16 20:09:54 UTC
correct
Comment 7 Sebastien Bacher 2005-01-16 20:31:16 UTC
ok, so that's a bug with your fam/gamin config probably, the thumbnail should be
refresh, the bug is known. I'm closing it as a dup.
