Most gnome applications implement this, and it is the only fast way to switch
tabs with the keyboard. Maybe this shortcut could set set at the gtk level for
the sake of consistency.

You have to use Alt+Ctrl+PageUP/PageDOWN.

This is the default gtk+ shortcut when a notebook contains a text view.
