It would be nice to store the character set configuration in the profile, yo
should not have to change the character set every time you log to gnome-terminal.

[NB: If you need to change the encoding every time you open a terminal, you
might be much better off changing the encoding under which the whole system
operates; most distros provide a way to do this]
