Description Allison Karlitskaya (desrt) 2004-09-19 20:52:55 UTC
The window list and window selector applets have similar names and identical
description in the "Add to Panel" dialog box.

Window List - Switch between open windows.
Window Selector - Switch between open windows.

Left to guess based on name alone, I'd come to the incorrect conclusion (ie: I
would expect that the 'list' was the pulldown list and the 'selector' was the
taskbar-type selector.)

Randomly filing against the Window List Applet subcomponent because I can't put
it under both.

Vidar: you always have nice ideas for bugs like this. Do you have an opinion here?
Comment 5 Vidar Braut Haarr 2005-01-03 23:21:06 UTC
I think I'd go for either "Window Bar" or "Taskbar" (isn't that what Win use?)
for the list.

"Window Selector" is also a misleading name. It suggests "some way of selecting
a window", but gives no clue to the actual implementation (menu). What about
"Window Selection Menu" ?
Perhaps we should redesign the icon from showing a window overlaying another,
and into an actual menu ?

This has actually bothered me too ;) thanks, Vincent!

Sorry for the spam. Mass-marking some bugs to the 2.10.x milestone.

Comment 7 Vincent Untz 2005-01-29 01:10:48 UTC
Vidar: the bug was more about the description of the icons, that are really similar.
Comment 8 Vincent Untz 2005-02-01 12:06:30 UTC
For reference, we changed the name from window menu to window selector in bug
#108214.

String freeze. Punting to 2.12.

Proposition from Tim, in bug #169514:

Window List: Switch between open windows using a "task bar"
Window Selector: Switch between open windows using a pop-up menu

I'm not sure about the "task bar". Maybe "using buttons" would be better...
Comment 13 Tim Gerla 2005-03-07 18:52:39 UTC
Vincent, sorry about the dup. I'm also not sure about "task bar". It's kind of
technical. I'd go for either more descriptive applet names as proposed above, or
"using a set of buttons".
