Description eclipsboi 2004-08-01 11:04:45 UTC
Distribution: Slackware Slackware 9.1.0
Package: nautilus
Severity: normal
Version: GNOME2.6.1 unspecified
Gnome-Distributor: Dropline Systems
Synopsis: Unable to change default view without having to delete the computer metadata file and restarting X
Bugzilla-Product: nautilus
Bugzilla-Component: Metadata
Bugzilla-Version: unspecified
Description:
Description of Problem:
I had accidentally changed my default view for Computer to Catalog, and
was unable to change it back to anything else. So, everytime I launched
Computer I would get the error, "The Catalog view encountered an error
while starting up. The location cannot be displayed with this viewer."
Try as I may, and try as I might, no matter how many times I changed my
default view to something else--either List or Icon--the setting would
never stick. I would close Computer and reopen it to see that same error
about Catalog view.

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Open Computer
2. Click the View Menu and select View as...
3. Select Catalog view and click Modify
4. Click "Use as default for "Computer" only
5. Click Done

Actual Results:
You should get the error after clicking Done, and every time after
opening up Computer. If you go back and change the setting, close
Computer, and reopen it, the message appears again.

Expected Results:
The setting change from Catalog to either Icon or List should be
respected until explicitly changed by the user later.

How often does this happen?
Every time; consistently.

Additional Information:
I am using Gnome 2.6.1 with Nautilus 2.6.3. The only way I can get rid
of the error is to delete my ~/.nautilus/metafiles/computer:%2F%2F%2F.xml file and then log out and
back into Gnome.
