Thanks for reporting this bug. However, to do something about it, we would need more precise information. What is your exact version number of gnucash? How big is you data file? When you said "I saved my work and clicked on the exit button", do you mean you clicked on the "save" button and then on the "exit" button? Could it be possible that the process of saving (indicated by the progress bar in the lower right) was still ongoing when you clicked on the "exit" button? If yes, then this would certainly narrow down the causes of this problem. Also, the direct workaround is to wait until the saving process has finished (progress bar completed) and only then pressing "exit".
