GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 141418
Add a keyboard shortcut to open the Window Selector applet
Last modified: 2020-11-07 12:36:24 UTC
Just as one can bind a keystroke to bring up the Panel menu (Alt-F1 by default), it would be helpful to have a similar ability to bind a keystroke to display the Window Selector menu.
Peter, What is the Window Selector menu?
The small icon/menu that typically appears in the upper right of the menu panel. Install it into a panel by right-clicking on the panel, choosing Add to Panel->Utility->Window Selector. When selected, a menu appears listing all of the running applications. This functionality duplicates what can be done with Alt-Tab to cycle through the windows, but is perhaps less verbose for a speech user. I don't see this as a high priority item because it is duplicate functionality. Nontheless, I think it would be a nice addition.
I think this should ideally go into the Keyboard Shortcuts capplet, so you can bind it to whatever key you want. Note you can always use Alt-Tab to cycle through the windows available in your workspace.

I might be wrong, but I think this bug should be assigned to metacity.
It needs a panel change first so metacity has a way to tell the panel to open that menu.
Are we headed towards an explosion of I-need-a-keybinding-to-access-this-applet? If so, we may want to address this in a more general way...
True, though we'd first have to figure out what that way is... Something like a general way to send an action name to the panel maybe.

I would like to point out that this feature will solve a problem with using Metacity with the Pepper Pad 3. Right now, the problem is that it is not possible to switch between more than 2 windows since the Pad uses a sticky keys strategy for dealing with Ctrl, Shift, and the special function key. Each activation of Ctrl-Tab simply toggles back to the last focused window. Holding down Tab afer clicking Ctrl cycles through the windows at the rate at which the keyboard repeats (very fast). My point in all this is that a window list activated by a shortcut makes it possible to more easily toggle windows on portable devices that don't have the same keyboard functionality as regular terminals.

(In reply to comment #9) > True, though we'd first have to figure out what that way is... > > Something like a general way to send an action name to the panel maybe. Has this "general way" been implemented yet? If it has, I might be willing to implement this feature if I have some spare time since I've been wanting the feature for several years now.

bugzilla.gnome.org is being replaced by gitlab.gnome.org. We are closing all old feature requests in Bugzilla which have not seen updates for many years. If you still use metacity and if you are still requesting this feature in a currently supported version of GNOME (currently that would be 3.38), then please feel free to report it at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/metacity/-/issues/ Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry it could not be implemented.
