GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 140900
Science and Engineering toplevel menus
Last modified: 2007-07-04 08:44:20 UTC
The default categories provided in the applications menu lack important categories like "Science" and "Engineering". Those are the two that really should be added by default, from the full listing at http://freedesktop.org/Standards/menu-spec/menu-spec-0.8.html As an example, although I can list Celestia (celestia.sf.net) properly as "Science;Astronomy;Application", in the end it ends up in "Other" on a default gnome installation. Having a "Science" category would be nice.
Forgot to mention that good justification for this is how much Gnome is being considered for school systems lately. There scientific and engineering programs are a big thing.
Moving to gnome-vfs, but note that just because there is a Category in the menu spec doesn't mean there should be a separate menu for that Category.
Noted, but with the case of a scientific category, there is absolutely no other category that it can be matched to. It's also a category that I expect to grow.
So where, exactly, are you saying you think this application should come up in the menus? I'm going on the assumption that you'll have more Science applications installed than I, and can say whether or not you think it should go under Science or Education's heading. (IMHO, "Science" in the FDO spec should probably be changed to "Scientific".
Moving to gnome-menus for comments.
Okay, I'm closing this - this should be discussed on xdg-list. No code changes are required in GNOME to handle new categories.
So,
Mark: Any news on this discussion? I think it would really be nice to have these categories.
Mark: Why did you add gnome-vfs to the QA list while this bug still has gnome-menus as product. Isn't this a gnome-menus issue?
Happy to add a Science sub-menu if Celestia and others are using the Science category. Need an icon for the menu, though. Pat, could you handle that? Maybe ask jimmac nicely :)
Any progress Pat ?
Created attachment 46856 [details] Candidate Icon (svg source)
Created attachment 46857 [details] 48 pixel version
Created attachment 46858 [details] 24 pixel version
Created attachment 46859 [details] 24 pixel xcf. I attempted Jimmac's method of manually tracing the downsampled icon. I am not entirely convinced it worked.
Created attachment 46860 [details] 24 pixel version exported from Inkscape. Exporting a 24 pixel version directly from Inkscape actually produces favourable results. Can we use this until something better can be made?
Created attachment 46861 [details] Wrong attachment last time. 24px image from Inkscape. Correct 24px file exported from Inkscape.
Cool, I'll bounce you on to gnome-icon-theme where the icon needs to be committed - once that's done, come back to gnome-menus with the Science.directory.in Thanks
does gnome-science sound ok for the icon name? maybe a generic category-science?
Hi, ubuntu MOTU science team has been created to get as many science applications on ubuntu as possible. It would really help them if we get this menu added to enter all those science applications in a proper space.
I think one of the icons here would do just fine: http://live.gnome.org/GnomeArt_2fPlusPack Probably the beaker for being generic.
IMHO "Education" is better (more generic, could include Science and other stuff) as menu category, but I should check fd.o standard. Just my feeling. There are some great icons (tango style) from Andreas Nilsson here http://ramnet.se/~nisse/blog/?p=20 SVG and PNG available also here http://ramnet.se/~nisse/diverse/temp/tango/
"Education" is less suited: this category is needed for things like HAM and CAD programs, too.
Please, add an Education or Science category to gnome-menues (like in ubuntu) Thanks a lot
applications-science is in.
In what version is it fixed? I am using gnome-icon-theme-2.16.1 (in gentoo) and science apps like celestia (Categories=Astronomy;Science;Application;) is in "Others" category. Also, Education category is missing its icon. Thanks a lot :-)
trunk.
The icon is there. It doesn't mean that gnome-menus has an appropriate menu file to show a science menu category to the user. That is a separate issue and should be filed as a bug against gnome-menus if not already.
We have both science and engineering categories icons in g-i-t trunk, can we close this one?
Yes, but IMHO we should open a new one. Reading Desktop Menu Spec, it seems there are some "main" categories: AudioVideo, Audio, Video, Development, Education, Game, Graphics, Network, Office, Settings, System, Utility. Now, Education menu is available in gnome-menus, but Icon Naming Spec don't define any "applications-education" named icon. 'cause Education is a main category for desktop menu spec, maybe we should provide it. But this could need a change/update to Icon Naming Spec itself :-( BTW Science and Engineering are defined as additional categories...
Closing as per discussion.
