Description Simos Xenitellis 2004-04-14 06:17:27 UTC
==============================================>
SUMMARY
This is an RFE to get the city names of gweather to be localisable. Currently
they are not. Evolution used to include gweather to display weather information
at the Summary page and actually implemented localisable city names. The current
version of Evolution does not have the Summary page and I believe the code was
dropped.

In addition, when Evolution had the city names localisable, evolution.pot got
really big (over 5000 messages) and it was impossible for translators to
localise all the city names around the world. For gweather I recommend a
separate .po file (gweather.pot) that includes just the airport/city names. This
file will no show up in the final translation stats as it is not needed to be
translated fully. Contents shall be translated on need, thus the resulting .mo
file will be small.

==============================================>
BACKGROUND
gweather shows the current weather information of cities around the world.
The information are gathered from the airport database/ICAO list (see:
https://www.notams.jcs.mil/common/icao/index.html) based on a unique code given
to each airport. Using this code, gweather can retrieve from the Internet the
full weather information.

The airport codes are stored at /usr/share/gweather/Locations (or
gnome-applets/gweather/Locations) and this file was created manually and is
updated manually by contributors from information taken from
https://www.notams.jcs.mil/.

The file looks like:

...
[EU_GR]
name=Greece
loc0=Andravida LGAD ------ ---
loc1=Alexandroupolis LGAL ------ ---
loc2=Araxos LGRX ------ ---
loc3=Athinai LGAT ------ ---
loc4=Chania LGSA ------ ---
loc5=Elefsis LGEL ------ ---
loc6=Iraklion LGIR ------ ---
loc7=Kalamata LGKL ------ ---
loc8=Kavala LGKV ------ ---
...

The four letter code is the airport code and it is generally associated with the
city the airport is near at.

There is a Translation Project domain for regions in the worldwhich is fairly
complete,
athttp://www2.iro.umontreal.ca/translation/registry.cgi?domain=iso_3166_2Obviously
it follows the standard ISO-3166, Part 2.However, weather is too variable to fit
to regions of a country. Inaddition, it would be a lot of work to map airports
to regions.

RFE
A way should be devised to get the city name localisable from the Locations file.

Users should manually add cities to the Locations file, generate gweather.po and
translate the portion necessary.

It's possible to machine-generate a full Locations file from the ICAO list at
https://www.notams.jcs.mil/common/icao/index.html
I am not sure if it will be usable as it includes military airports and some
airports have a code only.

It's recommended to check the code from past versions of Evolution as it was
implemented there.
