Description wallex 2004-04-10 00:09:44 UTC
Ok... I don't know who's idea was it to use the "Alt" key to swap between
erase/anti-erase modes, but I am definitely not happy with it. Ok let's not turn
this into a rant, but into something productive. Using Alt for swapping the
eraser's mode is not that good... because it conflicts with my windows manager
in a major way (alt dragging is for moving the window, you know... and I can't
change that in Fluxbox).
So I ask for a solution...
1. Is it possible to change/reassign the key? I was so much better off when the
eraser used Ctrl instead of Alt for changing modes. Afterall, ctrl+click while
in eraser mode is for the dropper (who needs to pick a color when you are using
the eraser??). The Dogde/Burn tool works with the ctrl key to swap modes, I
don't see why can't the eraser do so as well...

2. As an alternative solution, is there a way to "toggle" the mode using the
keys (without using the mouse)? I don't know, maybe double-hitting alt or
holding alt down for 1.5 seconds to toggle the mode indefinitely? (anything that
is faster than having to drag the mouse all the way over the tool's option
window and back will do).

Number 1 is my only hope to fix my "everyday normal-use case" in which I am
using the eraser and CONSTANTLY swapping between eraser/anti-erase mode while
defining some edge.. as you can probably tell, using alt and getting the windows
dragged around while trying to use the eraser is driving me crazy...
#2 would provide sort of a patch... but it'd be sort of a pain considering how
constantly I toggle between modes...

Has noone come up with this issue before? I did a search on "eraser alt" and I
got "Zarro Boogs found".

"Say your right words, the goblins said" (from the movie "Labyrinth")

Yes, it has been reported before, but thanks for trying. However this is not
specific to the eraser so I'm going to follow up in bug #131378.

Your problem is worse. You can basically not use GIMP at all because you can't
move a selection if your WM catches the Alt modifier. There's a workaround
though: press Shift with Alt.

You should reconfigure your window manager to use the Window key, not Alt. Alt
is for applications and should not be used by the WM.
