Description deeBs 2004-03-26 10:45:55 UTC
Hi there,

I have previously been using GIMP version 1.2.5 with GTK+1.3. It generally has
been working fine (and still does work fine).

Now I have installed GIMPv2 and GTK+2 in parallel with the old installation. To
install GIMP2 I used the precompiled Windows binaries in the following Zip files:

gtk+-2.2.4-20040124-setup.zip
gimp-2.0.0-i586-setup.zip

which I downloaded from:

http://www2.arnes.si/~sopjsimo/gimp/stable.html

When I installed GIMP2, and then tried to run it from the shortcut icon
automatically generated by the installer, I get problems when it comes to
loading the fonts (during the startup splash screen). The first time I tried to
load the fonts, it took ages to do anything, and then finally bailed out. Now
any time I try to start it up it bails out as soon as it starts to try and load
the fonts (Looking for data files fonts), with the following message flashing up
briefly in the DOS window:

(gimp-2.0.exe:1936): GLib-CRITICAL **: file gconvert.c: line 498 (g_convert.c):
assertion 'str != NULL' failed

with also a Windows 'Program Error' popup dialog box. The Windows popup says an
error log is being created, but frustratingly it doesn't say where!

The workaround for this problem seems to be to run GIMP2 from the DOS command
line using the --no-fonts switch. However, when I fire up GIMP2 with this
--no-fonts switch, it all works O.K., and I've been able to try some simple
image loading and editing with no problems. However, this is obviously not ideal
in the long run, as I assume this means I will lose some functionality.

Cheers,

deeBs
