I spent my first ten minutes with F-Spot being really confused. I had created
some tags and was trying to set them -- I'd double-click on a picture, then
click on a checkbox in the lefthand pane and get pissed off as my picture
disappeared. (Then it'd crash if I clicked the forward or back arrows, but
that's a separate issue.)

Basically, it's not clear that the checkboxes on the left are filters rather
than settings for the current picture. Maybe once the tag-setting UI is better
this won't be an issue, but I was struggling for a while and I consider myself a
non-idiot at figuring out how to use programs ...

Agreed, I found the same behaviour, it would make more sense if these buttons
would be used for setting tags instead of filtering based on them. Such a filter
could be run from a dialog or menu-item called "Filter", much like usual with
E-mail filters and Searches..

This bug would be solved by my proposed solution to bug #139796 which allows for
arbitrary querying with tags, and removes the checkboxes entirely.
