GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 137304
Discs menu gone from desktop context menu
Last modified: 2005-06-22 20:41:59 UTC
I can't mount discs from nautilus desktop menu anymore. On nautilus 2.4 mounting any disc is 2 clicks away, on 2.5 is burried I don't know where. nautilus-2.5.90-1 Fedora development
You can access your disks from the computer icon on the desktop or navigating to computer:// using the location bar/window.
That's still 1 more click, what's the rationale for removing it from the desktop menu ?

Egle wrote: The item 'Disks' disappeared from right click menu on version 2.6. It has to be brought back because of: 1. Users (especially advanced ones) got used to access the disks by right click; 2. Right click access is quicker; 3. More comfortable for part of users; 4. The compatibility with old versions is very important for both simple and advanced users. Sure, it is very good that more user friendly way to access disks appeared, but I do believe that the old one has to stay possible, too.

It also appears that the icons that showed up on the desktop when a drive was mounted have disappeared. Is this intentional? I really found those even more important than the menu mounting items.
People really frustrated with this disappearance. Pretty please - put it back. GNOME is not in the position yet to hide the good old unix mount/umount semantics. Not yet:)

Perhaps an even better alternative would be a panel button which shows the menu of mountables when clicked.
Carsten: applets 2.10 (2.8 as well maybe?) does have such a disk mounter applet.
People, use the disc mounter applet - it's faster to use and neater than the context menu ever was. Whether volumes are shown on the desktop depends on the apps->nautilus->desktop->volumes_visible gconf key btw.
