GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 136993
need a final splash image for GIMP 2.0
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
We need a final splash image for the 2.0 release. Should IMO be part of the rc1 tarball already since I really want everything in this tarball to be completely ready for 2.0.
I may fail to manage to devote some time for this. Here's some older tests for the 2.0 splash screens http://jimmac.musichall.cz/splash/gimp/gimp2.png http://jimmac.musichall.cz/splash/gimp/gimp2penguin.png http://jimmac.musichall.cz/splash/gimp/gimp2wilber.png
Here's a suggestion I made some time ago. It's based on the gimp 1.0 splash screen, with elements from newer splash screens. Here: http://www.stud.ntnu.no/~andrearo/gimp_splash.png
The plain 2.0 splash we had for pre series is at http://jimmac.musichall.cz/stuff/gimp2-splash/gimp-2.0a.png An extended version that could be used to render the text+progressbar on top: http://jimmac.musichall.cz/stuff/gimp2-splash/gimp-2.0a-extended.png various other variations: http://jimmac.musichall.cz/stuff/gimp2-splash/
Here's a mockup of text and progressbar rendered on top of the splash image: http://sven.gimp.org/splash-mockup.png Or, render only the "through" of the progress-bar, like this: http://sven.gimp.org/splash-mockup2.png
The splash, while stylish, is a little plain, I think. Would it be possible to get some elements of the GUI or examples of effects montaged behind the text? A little more colour wouldn't hurt, given that the splash is going to be the first thing people see of the new app (something like the about dialog, which I like a lot). Cheers, Dave.

How about something like this (attachment above)?
Can we please refrain from attaching splash images to this report? URLs work much better for this.
Here is another proposal based on the following idea: Wilber's tail looks like a brush, so it can leave a colorful trail. In this example, I tried to use some elements of the GIMP toolbox. But this looks a bit too crowded so it may be better to use something else. Anyway, this is only a test intended to give more ideas to jimmac. http://www.gimp.org/~raphael/gimp2wilber-test.png
Somebody mentioned on IRC that the above splash screens look like they are for a vector image program rather than a bitmap image program. I am not sure I agree, but I can see where they were coming from. Would it be an idea to incorporate photographic elements in the splash?
I said the same thing about photographic elements on irc. The photographic splash screens have always been my favorite.
When I created the above image based on jimmac's splash screen, my first idea was to include photographic elements instead of parts of the GIMP toolbox. But I couldn't find what kind of photo to put there... Anyway, I agree that some photogaphic elements would be nice. Either based on the idea above, or based on a totally different concept like some of the previous splash screens.
http://sven.gimp.org/splash-mockup2.png is still my favourite. I understand some people have a problem of a simple design. People prefer saturated vivid colors and buy detergets that use the full color spectrum on the cover. None of the 'fancy' splashes here are convincing however. I have an idea involving a photo, but I doubt I can make it in time.
I've made another suggestion here, with a 3d model of wilber: http://www.stud.ntnu.no/~andrearo/gimp_wilber_splash.png
Another argument against what I proposed above is that it introduces a new Wilber, which is different from the one shown in the tip of the day and featured on the web site (old or new). Although I am not opposed to a more modern Wilber, we should only put it on the splash screen if this is somehow coordinated with the other "official" appearances of Wilber. I don't think that we have the time to do this now. Note to Andreas Røsdal: Your 3D Wilber is very nice. Unfortunately, it suffers from the problem described above, so it should probably wait for the next major release of the GIMP. So I would go for jimmac's proposal.

This bug report is really not meant as a contest or something. It's just a reminder for me that I need to commit Jimmac's splash screen before 2.0 is packaged.
Just a point, which I didn't appreciate earlier: Gimp opens so quickly on a decent machine that the splash screen is hardly visible, so (a) it isn't worth stressing over a whole lot, and (b) the less obtrusive it is the better. The story would be different if you actually had to pay attention to it.
That's exactly why I prefer a plain splash over a complex one.
I used http://jimmac.musichall.cz/stuff/gimp2-splash/gimp-2.0a-extended.png and cut a few pixels off the bottom. This has been tested this with different font sizes between 8 and 18. 2004-03-15 Sven Neumann <sven@gimp.org> * data/images/gimp_splash.png: splash image for GIMP 2.0 by Jimmac. * app/gui/splash.[ch]: draw the text on the splash image, not below it.
