Description Sebastien Bacher 2004-02-01 13:42:26 UTC
This bug was originally reported in the Debian BTS:
http://bugs.debian.org/223526

"Given how Streamtuner's only purpose is to be a frontend to Shoutcast's
directory, it seems to me that it would be better to just integrate it into
Rhythmbox, by creating a 3rd main category called Shoutcast (in addition to
existing Library and Radio) that would be merged from Streamtuner's "yellow
pages of mp3 streams"."

I think this would be very cool, its something I brought up on ubuntuforums.org.
Trouble is I believe SC breaks some copyright or privacy laws by getting the
list of radios. Maybe if there was a way to subscribe to a radio RSS feed, the
user could select which one etc, Although I know of no services like this.

I thought it would also be cool to have the same interface as the library, where
the user could browser by song and artists, or genre.

Does anyone know where its possible to subscribe to RSS feeds containing radio
lsitings?

Both shoutcast.com and live365.com specifically prohibit applications from doing
this in their terms-of-service.

For shoutcast:
"Systematic retrieval of data or other content from the Directory or other use
of such data and other content, directly or indirectly, to create or compile a
collection, database or directory without written permission from Nullsoft is
prohibited."

icecast.org (run by Xiph) has something similar and I doubt they would have a
problem with it - but I'm not aware of any machine-parsable version of their
directory.

Bug 142287 mentions magnatune.com, which leta you listen to full albums before
deciding to buy them (similar to the iTunes store).

Why not create a directory RSS feed on rhythmbox.org and just add individial
radio stations to it. Allow users to suggest stations from within RB and have
those streams added to the directory behind the scenes. Let the community build
the directory! :D
Comment 4 James "Doc" Livingston 2006-02-23 13:41:40 UTC
Bug 127794 has an initial patch for loading the icecast directory.
Comment 5 William 2006-04-24 18:55:13 UTC
I think this would be very cool. I also think this should be a plugin, and in an Icecast item seperate from the Radio item.
