Description Elros Cyriatan 2003-12-07 01:14:44 UTC
It's currently not possible to disable Recent Files functionality, or
`history' functionality in general.

I'd suggest to create a GNOME-wide setting to collectively disable all such
functionality in all GNOME applications. The reason for this is that I
think a lot of users really like this functionality, while a lot of other
users don't use it or even dislike it and for them it's just irritating
(excuse the word). I think this is really such a thing when it makes sense
to have a choice and I'm interested in how other people think about this.

This setting might e.g. be used for Epiphany to turn History off by
default, if it's decided to make it of a general character.

Note that this bug is a bit related with bug #105639.

I can understand why you might want to clear the recent files list as
is discussed in bug #105639, but I don't see how it is so "irritating"
that we should provide a preference to disable it.

Could you elaborate more?

Also, this is the wrong product for the bug. Please try and find a
better home for it.

The reason that I don't like 'history' functionality (which includes
Recent Files), is that I don't use it, and that I feel it's in the way
. I prefer a simplistic desktop, without such 'handy' functions, and I
think I'm not alone. The reason I request this disable-functionality
to be a preference setting, is that that would make it transparent,
since it would apply for all applications at once.

Sorry for that, I didn't know where to put it, so I chose this general
category. Do you have a suggestion? Maybe control-center?

I don't think this is going to happen really. I'll move this to the general
product for now.

Maybe we can add a gconf key to disable it... (yay! another gconf key)
Comment 5 Elros Cyriatan 2005-01-06 11:16:54 UTC
In the meantime this functionality has effectively been implemented (Epiphany
lockdown for history, `chmod -w .recently-used' disables Recent Files), although
hidden for the user. Closing.
