cannot change the background setting in the System menu. It just opened

Thanks for the bug report. This particular bug has already been
reported into our bug tracking system, but please feel free to report
any further bugs you find.  You may want to upgrade to Gnome 2.4,
first though.  There have been many, many, many improvements since the
ancient beta version that you are using.
