rename to "Send Link To..." and assign shortcut key from HIG (803 bytes, patch)

Description spark 2003-09-10 18:36:19 UTC
The menu item File -> Send To is a bit wierd -- firstly, you'd expect it to
send a copy of the page, which it doesn't - it opens a compose window with
the URL in the msg body.

I really don't see why it is the responsibility of the browser to provide
this menu item: it's just as easy for the user to open their email client
and copy and paste the URL. This menu item also becomes non-functional when
the user has no email client (or they haven't set one up in gnome).

As I see it, this "feature" is only there because all the other web
browsers have it which isn't really an excuse :)

Comments?
Comment 1 Marco Pesenti Gritti 2003-09-10 21:36:50 UTC
The item is described in the HIG. This doesnt mean we must have it but
if it's there maybe there is a reason. I'd just talk with seth or
calum about this.
Comment 2 spark 2003-09-10 21:47:57 UTC
The item described in the HIG is to send the actual document (i.e. the
web page in this instance), which isn't what this command does at the
moment.
Comment 3 Marco Pesenti Gritti 2003-09-10 21:49:40 UTC
Yeah I dont feel the difference particularly relevant though. The
document is one click far.
Comment 4 Stuart Gilbert 2003-09-16 16:10:01 UTC
The document isn't one click away if the document gets removed from
the server.
Copying the actual content is what's needed because of the tendancy of
content to go and change on people.

Comment 6 Christian Persch 2003-09-20 12:09:45 UTC
Info from bug 119183:

The string "S_end To..." should be better "S_end Link to" because it sends
a link, not the page.

So if we remove the feature, bug 119183 is fixed. If we retain the
feature we should rename to "Send Link To", _or_ we should send
content, and keep the name "Send To".

rename to "Send Link To..." and assign shortcut key from HIG
Comment 8 Marco Pesenti Gritti 2003-11-03 22:44:34 UTC
Personally I dont feel Send Link particularly better. Sending a link
is just a way to send a web document (the better considering the
dynamic nature of the web). Anyway you can commit if I'm the only one
to feel this way (for example Dave approve it ;).
Comment 9 Dave Bordoley [Not Reading Bug Mail] 2003-11-03 23:22:28 UTC
i'm not convinced there really is a good reason to change (except to
be pendatic), I guess i'm not sure we should ignore the HIG yet. I
wonder what seth/mpt think.
Comment 10 dbrody 2003-12-25 01:54:59 UTC
Considering that there is a gnome bounty for a send-to in nautilus,
that I believe was, or almost is, finished, it would be nice if
epiphany had the option to use that same sendto frontend. I believe it
is a seperate module, and if there are dependency issues then maybe an
extension could provide it.

A consistant behavior would be very good IMHO.
