GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 116012
Menu closes unexpectedly on desktop
Last modified: 2015-05-11 10:54:08 UTC
Place mouse in bottom right hand corner of desktop so that when Alt_F1 is pressed the menu is popped up so that the mouse is positioned on the second menu item. Press up arrow to reach the first menu item (Applications) and then right arrow to display the Accessories sub-submenu. Press down arrow. Instead of displaying the Desktop Preferences sub-submenu the Applications submenu is closed and the next item in the desktop menu is highlighted.
I will have a look at this to see if I can understand what is haoppening.
I can reproduce this with tooltips disabled. I can also reproduce it by pressing Alt+F1 when the mouse is in the middle of the screen, moving the mouse to the second item on the menu and then pressing Up arrow, Left arrow and Down atrrow. It seems that the menu item in the main menu is receving an "enter-notify" signal while the timer in gtk_real_menu_item_select is running for the menu item which we attempted to select. Transferring to gtk for help in understanding why the enter-notify signal occurs.
Marking AP2 to reflect the a11y team's assessment of impact.
Apologies for spam... marking as GNOMEVER2.3 so it appears on the official GNOME bug list :)
I think this is the same as: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=84841 For me, I can only get such things to happen when you have three levels of nesting and the third menu menu appears between the first menu and the mouse. In this case, why you get the enter should be obvious, though the fix is less obvious. Is this what you are seeing?
I think so. I have now moved to gnome-panel 2.3.x where Alt+F1 displays the menu attached to the menu bar. In this case the problem does not occur. I am removing GNOMEVER2.3 Keyword as the problem does not occur in GNOME 2.3. I am also removing Status Whiteboard AP2.
reinstating status-whiteboard accessibility note, at a lower priority (AP3, meaning significant bug but not a stopper) - since there are still situations which will trigger this behavior. This behavior can be frustrating/confusing to blind users.

Mass changing gtk+ bugs with target milestone of 2.4.2 to target 2.4.4, as Matthias said he was trying to do himself on IRC and was asking for help with. If you see this message, it means I was successful at fixing the borken-ness in bugzilla :) Sorry for the spam; just query on this message and delete all emails you get with this message, since there will probably be a lot.
