I cannot get the gnome-panel working, it pops up a windows that tell me to
visit this site.


Then I tried to start it from a terminal...

root]# gnome-panel

system-tray-applet-ERROR **: file obox.c: line 107 (get_class): should not
be reached
aborting...

You are using RedHat 8 and you made your panel vertical.  Please see
bug 94625 for workarounds and locations where you can download
upgraded packages.
