GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 114813
Application "gnome-panel" (process 1425) has crashed due to a fatal error. (Aborted)
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
Description of Problem: As soon as the computer logs on to Gnome, the panel is on the left hand side of the screen and that error pops up, you cannot do anything with the panel while the error is up and the only way to get rid of it is to click "close" and kill the panel. The panel then re-starts itself, producing the same error message once again. Steps to reproduce the problem: 1. Re-started Machine 2. Logged into gnome 3. error pops up Actual Results: Cannot use my panel Expected Results: Cannot use panel How often does this happen? Every time I start computer, it started happening randomly after I had my computer off for 3 days. Additional Information:
The same thing is happening to me. It only started happening recently. I have my gnome panel configured to launch on the left side....perhaps this is affected by that. My system: Redhat 8 shipped version + latest RHN updates.
Same here. I also have the panel configured for the left hand side of the screen. No problems when I log in as root which has the panel configured for the bottom of the screen.
You're all using RedHat 8 and this is the infamous vertical panel crasher bug. This probably would have been found more quickly had you provided a stack trace (which we normally need to diagnose the problem with bugs--this is just a special case). To help us resolve your problems more quickly in the future, please follow the directions at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/getting-traces.cgi to provide us with a stack trace. Workarounds and fixed packages can be obtained from bug 94625. Also, I heard that RedHat finally released official fixed packages (despite having them available through that bug report for at least half a year...), so if you update all your packages you should be fine. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 94625 ***
