GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 113342
gst-thumbnail fails with "mpeg2dec: decoding error"
Last modified: 2009-08-15 18:40:50 UTC
Forwarded from the Debian Bug Tracking System. Cf. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=193008 Package: nautilus-media Version: 0.2.1-2 Severity: important Tags: upstream When attempting to thumbnail videos using gst-thumbnail, the following error message is returned repeatedly: ** (process:590): WARNING **: mpeg2dec: decoding error I've tried installing the mpeg2dec package and using it to watch mpeg videos, however it doesn't work. It says that it either decoded 0 or a random, very small, number of frames and then dies. This is most likely an upstream problem, but I'm reporting it here as well since it does render the gst-thumbnail portion of nautilus-media unusable. - -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux Thief 2.4.20 #1 Thu Mar 27 04:43:54 CST 2003 i686 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C Versions of packages nautilus-media depends on: ii bonobo-activation 1:2.2.1.1-2 Bonobo Activation Framework ii debconf 1.2.35 Debian configuration management sy ii gconf2 2.2.0-1 GNOME configuration database syste ii gstreamer-audiofile 0.6.1-1 AudioFile plugin for GStreamer ii gstreamer-gconf 0.6.1-1 GConf support for GStreamer ii gstreamer-misc 0.6.1-1 Collection of various GStreamer pl ii gstreamer-plugin-apps 0.6.1-1 Simple GStreamer applications ii gstreamer-vorbis 0.6.1-1 Vorbis plugin for GStreamer ii libart-2.0-2 2.3.12-1 Library of functions for 2D graphi ii libatk1.0-0 1.2.3-1 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libaudiofile0 0.2.3-4 The Audiofile Library ii libbonobo-activation4 1:2.2.1.1-2 Bonobo Activation Framework -- run ii libbonobo2-0 2.2.1-1 Bonobo CORBA interfaces library ii libbonoboui2-0 2.2.0.1-2 The Bonobo UI library ii libc6 2.3.1-17 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libeel2-2 2.2.3.1-1 Eazel Extensions Library (for GNOM ii libesd0 0.2.29-1 Enlightened Sound Daemon - Shared ii libgail-common 1.2.1-1 GNOME Accessibility Implementation ii libgail17 1.2.1-1 GNOME Accessibility Implementation ii libgconf2-4 2.2.0-1 GNOME configuration database syste ii libgcrypt1 1.1.12-2 LGPL Crypto library - runtime libr ii libglade2-0 2.0.1-3 Library to load .glade files at ru ii libglib2.0-0 2.2.1-3 The GLib library of C routines ii libgnome2-0 2.2.0.1-2 The GNOME 2 library - runtime file ii libgnomecanvas2-0 2.2.0.2-1 A powerful object-oriented display ii libgnomeui-0 2.2.0.1-2 The GNOME 2 libraries (User Interf ii libgnomevfs2-0 2.2.3-2 The GNOME virtual file-system libr ii libgnutls5 0.8.6-4 GNU TLS library - runtime library ii libgstreamer0.6-0 0.6.1-1 Core GStreamer shared library ii libgtk2.0-0 2.2.1-6 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libjpeg62 6b-7 The Independent JPEG Group's JPEG ii liblinc1 1:1.1.0-1 library to simplify creating netwo ii libnautilus2-2 2.2.3.1-1 Shared libraries that part of Naut ii liborbit2 1:2.6.1-1 Libraries for ORBit2 - a CORBA ORB ii libpango1.0-0 1.2.1-3 Layout and rendering of internatio ii libpopt0 1.6.4-2 lib for parsing cmdline parameters ii libtasn1-0 0.1.2-1 Manage ASN.1 structures (runtime) ii libxml2 2.5.6-2 GNOME XML library ii nautilus 2.2.3.1-1 File manager and graphical shell ( ii xlibs 4.2.1-6 X Window System client libraries ii zlib1g 1:1.1.4-11 compression library - runtime - -- debconf information: * nautilus-media/thumbnailer: true From: Johannes Rohr <j.rohr@gmx.de> Date: 12 May 2003 12:27:50 +0200 Alex Malinovich <demonbane@the-love-shack.net> writes: > Package: nautilus-media > Version: 0.2.1-2 > Severity: important > Tags: upstream > > When attempting to thumbnail videos using gst-thumbnail, the following > error message is returned repeatedly: > > ** (process:590): WARNING **: mpeg2dec: decoding error > > I've tried installing the mpeg2dec package and using it to watch mpeg > videos, however it doesn't work. Still this sounds rather like a gstreamer bug. Or can you watch the same video with another gstreamer based application (e.g. gst-player)? Only gst-thumbnail dies with the mpeg2dec error. And mpeg2dec doesn't work. (I've already filed a > bug against mpeg2dec about it. #193010) mpeg2dec is a separate package which, as far as I see, has no relationship with gstreamer (gstreamer-mpeg2dec neither recommends nor suggests or depends on it). AFAIK all they have in common is that they both depend on the libmpeg2-3. But, well, who knows... What happens if you remove mpeg2dec and then retry to run gst-thumbnail? BTW: Thumbnailing mpeg videos works for me - even without gstreamer-mpeg2dec. Can you point me to an URL to reproduce the error you have encountered? Could you give an URL/Bugzilla bug ID for the bug you've reported upstream? Thanks, Johannes
Looks like gst-thumbnail fails on mpeg2 videos. With mpeg1 it appearantly works fine.
I definately think it's an mpeg2dec bug if mpeg2dec itself also fails on it. Can you try with a known-to-work version of mpeg2dec (say, 0.3.1) ? What version of mpeg2dec did you use ?
I have forwarded your question to the original bug reporter. (The original Debian bug report can be found at http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=193008 )
Judging from the other bug that the reporter filed, he must have been using mpeg2dec 0.3.1, cf. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=193010
