After compiling xine beta11 and totem-0.97.0 I notice totem just hangs. I
went back to a previous version of totem and it worked. You probably need
more info, let me know.

From the ChangeLog:
enable XInitThreads all the time now that a work-around has been found.

Possible workarounds:
 1) Remove the call to XInitThreads in totem.c, totem is very
 likely to lockup, especially with the xine backend
 2) Install a Gtk+ with XInput disabled
 3) Install a fixed version of X, see the bug above for the patch

Compiling gtk from the gnome 2.3.1 developer release fixed it for me.

Yes Michael, that would be because your self-compiled version of gtk+
doesn't have XInput enabled. That's option 2) in the list above.
