GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 106470
gedit should allow use of either default font, default monospaced font, or custom font
Last modified: 2007-01-02 17:57:53 UTC
Currently gedit allows users to select between the default theme font or a custom font. It would be beneficial to have it offer a third choice: default monospaced theme font. Often a monospaced font is preferencial when developing code as it improves layout of code. This would simplify the selection of the systems monospaced font without adding undue confusion to the Preferences. Also, but related, it might be worth considering a change of wording in the preferences to better reflect the wording used in the global Font Preferences dialog. As such "Use default theme font" should be changed to "Use Gnome Application Font" and if added "Use Gnome Terminal Font"[1]. [1] It might actually be worth rewording "Terminal Font" in the Font Preferences to "Monospaced Font" but this would involve changes outside gedit. Tell me if you think this makes sense and I'll file a bug against the appropriate package.
Implementing the above prososal would also resolve bug 101753, at least I think so.
It any work being done on this. I've noticed a lot of nice clean-ups in the Preferences, but I still feel that given that this would be a useful enhancement. I'm just following upo because it's been 12 months since I posted this initially.
For what is worth I don't have a strong opinion on this issue, anyway we are in string & UI freeze for 2.6.
moved to GNOMEVER2.7 as I think it's a worthwhile option.
This should definately be fixed in GNOME 2.11. It's been here for so long and also fixes bug 101753
I agree, I was just thinking about this aspect of gedit as well, when I searched Bugzilla I found this bug report, and #101753 It doesn't make sense to have the default font in gedit to be Monospace. There are Font Preferences, it would be a good idea if gedit would conform to them. There's a small difference in my opinion though. There should be two options for the font. The default option should be to use the font which is set to be the default fixed width font in the Font Preferences. Then there should be an option to choose a custom font. BTW, this bug is three years old and the last comment here is a year old. #101753 is three years old as well. I can't imagine that this should take so much time to change?
bug 101753 has been fixed. Closing this one as WONTFIX since the original goal was to allow the use of the default monospaced font, and that using a variable width font doesn't make much sense in a text editor...
