Description of Problem:


Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. log in
2. alternate: "gnome-panel" from command line
3. 

Actual Results:
Window starts up, panel paints, then error box
appears. Clicking "Close" enough times leaves
screen alive (can create terminal windows and run
almost everything) but no panel.


Expected Results:


How often does this happen?
every time


Additional Information:
Recent installation, new computer, plenty memory,
disk, etc. Problem occurred after a reboot, many
days after previous reboot. Things that changed
since previous reboot:

- installation of SunOne Studio
- ? installation of Java JDK 1.4.1 (not sure if
rebooted since that installation or not)

Thanks for the bug report.  We'll need more information to proceed,
though.  Can you get us a stack trace (see
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/getting-traces.cgi for information on how to
do this)  Also, a pointer: if it was gnome-panel that crashed, then
the product should be 'gnome-panel' and not 'gdm'

Other conditions not previously specified:

The bug happens only for the root user (root was used to install the
software noted above, in case that is relevant). I am able to use
gnome-panel fine from other users of the system.

You must have a vertical panel for the root user and a horizontal
panel for everyone else.  You are apparently the latest vicitim of the
infamous vertical panel crasher bug.  Havoc has a comment in bug 94625
about where you can get fixed packages.
