GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 104716
Articles copied to folder are not readable
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
1) copy an article to a local folder 2) switch to Folders 3) select folder where article was stored (manual listing of real directory confirms article file) 4) nothing shows up in the article window at all, something shows up but only articles also in the cache are readable
Works For Me (tm). I copied a random file from ~/.pan/messagages/cache to ~/.pan/messages/folders/pan.sent, fired up pan, looked at pan.sent, and the message was there. Did you copy the file during the pan session, then? Pan scans the directory at startup, rather than each time you visit the folder.
Here is what is in one of the "folders". When I select Folders/<foldername> in Pan, none of the 'articles' show up. pwd;ll /home/xxxx/.pan/data/messages/folders total 14 drwx------ 2 xxxx staff 512 Feb 12 05:18 DUMMY drwx------ 2 xxxx staff The two files were named similar to: slrnb2d2c5.2u9j.erik_does_not_like_spam@brumma.swip.net.msg
Another aspect of the overall "no articles" problem is the display of articles in the local folder where some are "not available" (ie; no "cache/disk" icon), yet the respective files DO exist. Clicking on one of the supposed non-existant files results in a task starting up for a "mock server" and log entries such as: Sun, 23 Feb 2003 00:35:39 - Loaded 69 articles for group "comp.unix.FreeBSD.misc" in 0.0 seconds (2305 art/sec) Sun, 23 Feb 2003 00:36:03 - Can't resolve Mock Server for Folders: Sun, 23 Feb 2003 00:36:03 - Unable to connect to server Mock Server for Folders:25 Sun, 23 Feb 2003 00:36:03 - Connect Failure Sun, 23 Feb 2003 00:36:03 - Can't resolve Mock Server for Folders: Sun, 23 Feb 2003 00:36:03 - Unable to connect to server Mock Server for Folders:25 Sun, 23 Feb 2003 00:36:03 - Connect Failure It would appear that there is some kind of parsing problem with Pan. The following is one sample article that shows up in the Subject list, but is not "cached/on disk", and causes Pan to try to connect to a 'mock server' (as noted above). --------------------------------------------------------------------- Path: saluki-news!vixen.cso.uiuc.edu!news.uchicago.edu!newsfeed.stanford.edu!cycl one.bc.net!news.uunet.ca!nnrp1.uunet.ca.POSTED!not-for-mail From: "Mykroft Holmes IV" <mykroft@explosive.mail.net> Newsgroups: comp.unix.bsd.freebsd.misc References: <att7kj$t9c$1@news.orst.edu> Subject: Re: cygwin<->FreeBSD tar Lines: 44 X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2600.0000 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2600.0000 Message-ID: <rQNR9.235473$C8.722557@nnrp1.uunet.ca> Date: Sat, 4 Jan 2003 22:42:14 -0500 NNTP-Posting-Host: 205.205.25.116 X-Trace: nnrp1.uunet.ca 1041738135 205.205.25.116 (Sat, 04 Jan 2003 22:42:15 EST) NNTP-Posting-Date: Sat, 04 Jan 2003 22:42:15 EST Organization: WorldCom Canada Ltd. Created attachment 14541 [details] Screenshow showing supposedly missing articles which do exist in folder
Since 0.13.4 is already out, perhaps I should bump this milestone. :)
Created attachment 14779 [details] Snapshot of local folder in question displayed; note 2nd to last entry
Even with Pan-0.14, there appears to be a note/article scanning problem. Note the second to the last entry in the snapshot with a Subject of "Re: mplayer with gui". The file in question, grep 'Re: mplayer with gui' * auf8gsk501@igloo.uran.net.ua.msg:Subject: Re: mplayer with gui exists, ll "auf8gsk501@igloo.uran.net.ua.msg" -rw-rw-r-- 1 xxxx xxxx 1410 Jan 1 06:14 auf8gsk501@igloo.uran.net.ua.msg but does not have the 'on disk/cache' icon next to it, nor is it readable from within Pan. Created attachment 14780 [details] tar.gz archive of "problem local folder" with all articles
1) Start up Pan2, 2) create new local folder, 3) quit Pan2, 4) unarchive "FreeBSD.misc.articles.tar.gz" attachement into new local folder 5) start Pan2, 6) switch to (local) folders and select new local folder, 7) same 'missing' articles in header window though files exist.
Articles copied to folders disappear, sometimes immediately, sometimes after a while. This makes folders pretty much COMPLETELY unusable. Note, pan-native folders work, it's folders you add yourself that are this unstable. SuSE 8.1 under KDE 3.0.5 (gnome is installed though), Pan 0.13.0.
It looks like these .msg files were saved with an older version of Pan. If you want the 'non-cached' messages to show up in the folder, you'll need to tweak their filenames to match the Message-ID header given in the file.
Renamed 6 or so files to match their Message-ID and now Pan2 fails to show ANY files in the associated local folder. BTW - the most common difference between their original filenames and their Message-ID's was the lack (or presence) of dollar signs.
Pan uses transform to remove illegal characters from Message-IDs when saving them as filenames. However, I can't find any explanation for transforming '$', as it appears that the only filesystem it's illegal in is ISO9660 CD-ROM, which is an unlikely location for Pan's article cache. I've fixed this bug in CVS such that Pan only transforms characters which actually _are_ illegal on vfat/fat32. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I have some concern about this change invalidating users' current article caches when upgrading Pan; however, this is a transient cost weighed against being able to easily share msg files with other apps. Since this change will already invalidate some articles in the cache, I took the opportunity to do something I'd intended to do: switch Pan's Message-ID encoding from its homebrew scheme to URL encoding, which is more likely to be recognized by people poking around in Pan's messages directories. http://cvs.gnome.org/bonsai/cvsview2.cgi?diff_mode=context&whitespace_mode=show&subdir=pan/pan/base&command=DIFF_FRAMESET&file=acache.c&rev1=1.64&rev2=1.65&root=/cvs/gnome http://cvs.gnome.org/bonsai/cvsview2.cgi?diff_mode=context&whitespace_mode=show&subdir=pan&command=DIFF_FRAMESET&file=ANNOUNCE.html&rev1=1.92&rev2=1.93&root=/cvs/gnome
