GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 101261
SHIFT + Del should delete a file without putting it in the trash
Last modified: 2006-04-09 11:49:34 UTC
The combination of the keys Shift + Delete should completly delete a file withot moving it to the trash.
Ok, sorry for the spam... I've seen that there is an option for this... on the other hand I'm not closing this bug right now since IMHO the keyboard shortcut should be available always, even if one choses not to have the delete item in the popup menu. Consider that right now shift+del (with the option not selected) does nothing, does not even put the file in the trash. After all is not a dangerous shortcut since a confirmation dialog is arised anyway.
I agree with this. It's useful and I don't see any danger of it causing problems.

I don't think the confirmation dialog will really help. If you hit Shift-del most people already convinced themselves and just find the confirmation dialog annoying and then do not bother reading the confirmation dialog and just select OK
One detail which would be really quite nice would be to explicitly unbind Shift-Del while a user is renaming a file, as it's an easy key combination to hit while doing certain edits. This is actually pretty critical if you drop the confirmation dialog.
I also would like to have this feature in, I miss the shortcut to really delete any file, independent of whether I have the ui option or not...

May I point out that Shift+Del is the traditional shortcut for Cut on many platforms that more-or-less follow the IBM Common User Access guidelines? (Shift+Insert is Paste). This was at least the case on OS/2 and the Windows 9x series. Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V has become more popular but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people still have these keybindings "hardwired". A safer option would therefore be to bind Shift+Del to Cut.
I personally like the current Shift+Del to bypass trash because the same shortcut is used in windows xp explorer, I'm used to it in windows and would like to have it in nautilus without having to show the extra menu option. And this action shows a confirmation dialog so there will be no problem to people that press it by mistake.
Applied.
