Description Daniel Brice 2002-12-02 21:33:51 UTC
I like to use my function keys to switch between workspaces quickly. So I
assinged F1, F2, F3 etc... to the "Switch to workspace 1", "Switch to
workspace 2", etc...

And that works, but in some cases switching between workspaces with those
keys locks up the keyboard so I can not type any text in any window or any
app. The only way I can get the keyboard working again is to hit
Ctrl-Alt-F1 (which takes me out of X-windows and into text mode) and then
Ctrl-Alt-F7 to get back. That seems to reset the keyboard so it works again.

I'm not exactly sure what causes the keyboard lock up - since it only
happens about 50% of the time. It does seem to be related to if you have
your cursor in an editable text box when you switch the work spaces at the
time.

If I use the Workspace Switcher to change workspaces (by clicking with my
mouse) my keyboard never locks up, so I'm sure it is related to the "Switch
to workspace" keybindings. I also tried using other keys instead of
function keys... but same problem.

% rpm -qf /usr/bin/gnome-keybinding-properties
control-center-2.0.1-8

Thanks,
Dan.

Has this changed in later versions?
Comment 2 Kjartan Maraas 2003-07-04 08:53:12 UTC
Also, does it happen if you bind to say, ctrl+f1, ctrl+f2 etc?
Comment 3 Jonathan Blandford 2003-08-04 18:43:54 UTC
This is more likely a metacity bug, as metacity handles keypresses --
the capplet just sets the settings for it. You'll probably have to
find a way to reproduce this cleanly.
Comment 4 Rob Adams 2003-08-14 06:52:32 UTC
I don't think that metacity does a keyboard grab when you use the
switch to workspace n bindings, so I'm not sure what could be going on
here.
Comment 5 Daniel Brice 2003-09-15 14:44:52 UTC
I can also reproduce this with Ctrl+F1, Ctrl+F2 etc...
Comment 6 Havoc Pennington 2003-09-25 01:03:19 UTC
Duplicate of http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=84564 ?
I can't think of what else it could be.
Comment 7 Rob Adams 2004-02-15 05:12:21 UTC
Could you try this with a CVS build of metacity? I can't reproduce
this, so maybe it's been fixed.
Comment 8 Elijah Newren 2004-09-04 18:21:42 UTC
Sounds like bug 147475 to me, which has been fixed.
Comment 9 Elijah Newren 2004-11-06 18:42:17 UTC
No further response, so I'm assuming it's a duplicate of 147475 (which is
closely related to 84564, the bug Havoc pointed out). Please reopen if you can
still observe this with Metacity >= 2.8.6.
