Description Alex Janssen Jr 2002-11-18 04:40:43 UTC
I have a Redhat 8 distribution.

The only thing I find as a drawback that kind of keeps me from using GIMP
on Linux, which I'd really like to do, is that GIMP throws out the
information fields my camera or any other program puts in the JPG files.
Info like the date and time of the picture and the camera name and
settings. I know some people don't think this data is important, but I
think it may be important some day. I'm a real pack-rat. I like to save
everything. :-)

I've been using Adobe Photoshop Elements and it leaves this info intact
even in modified copies. Maybe you could add this to your user wish list
for future implementation. Of course if Adobe didn't save this info, maybe
I wouldn't be sending you this message, I'd be using your program! But,
I've grown accustomed it being there.

The problem with Adobe and Microsoft is that they do not view each others
added data fields nor let you modify them although they do respect each
others data and leave it intact. Adobe won't show me the picture date or MS
properties data fields, but does leave them intact and visa-versa.

Maybe GIMP could me made to view and give the user the oportunity to modify
ALL of these data fields excepting the picture date, camera type and
settings. At least leave them intact.

For what it's worth, Adobe shows the following and allows me add a caption
and copyright notice in its file info dialog:

Exif/Make Eastman Kodak Company
Exif/Model KODAK DC290 Zoom Digital Camera (V01.00)
Exif/Orientation 1,top-left
Exif/X resolution 72.000000
Exif/Y resolution 72.000000
Exif/Resolution-unit 2,inch
Exif/YCbCr positioning 1,centered
Exif/compression 1,JPEG
Exif/Orientation 1,top-left

Some of the above info is only necessary for the program to know.

I know you've done a lot already and hope you take this in a
constructive way.

Thanks for a great alternative program! Keep up the good work.

Alex
