GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 98776
IDEA: layer-sizing should be done internally by gimp with some automatism, so noone should ever have to resize layers (except if they'v to be scaled)
Last modified: 2002-11-17 19:39:36 UTC
layers should always be as big as the content they carry. if i create a new layer, it's size is "0x0", because it contains nothing. if i add pixels or paste things, the layer gets the outer pixels (top-left, bottom-right), so gimp internal knows, of which size the layer is. the user should'nt be resonsible for resizing layers, this should be done by gimp automatically.
I don't think so - the default size of layers is fairly much what you say - if you add a new layer it gets the image size (which is reasonable), a text layer is big enough to contain the text it holds, when you paste an image as a new layer, the layer size is the same as that of the old image. On the other hand, the ability to change a layer's size is extremely useful. I don't see it as the user being responsible for layer resizing, but being allowed to resize layers. I propose closing this as WONTFIX. Cheers, Dave.
I propose closing this as WONTFIX too, because I always felt that hiding such important information from the user is a bad thing to do. Apps doing it feel IMHO annoying, not comfortable... But anyway, this but is a duplicate, see the discussion added to the original bug. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 93639 ***
i dont think so, i dont see why layers have to bee resizeable - could anyone explain to me? i know, i need the possibility to stretch/shrink - scale the contents of my layer - but the layer itself? look at photoshop - i never ever change layersizes - and i dont see why this should be a must-be in gimp. it has nothing to do with usability - nor does it make any sense for my understanding. all i notice is, that for example if i'd like to add some pixels to a small layer, i cannot just paint - i have to "fit layer to imagesize" or something similar - why? but maybe i dont see the real functionality of this "feature"?
