GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 96955
gnome-panel crashes on startup
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
Package: gnome-panel Severity: blocker Version: 2.0.6 Synopsis: gnome-panel crashes on startup Bugzilla-Product: gnome-panel Bugzilla-Component: Panel BugBuddy-GnomeVersion: 2.0 (2.0.3) Description: Description of Problem: RH8.0/sawfish setup, usual auto-hide bottom panel+ small panel at the left for launchers. Added another (sliding?) panel at the right for a few applets (keyboard, sound, RHN, date, IIRC). At next login, get a loop of crashing panel launch attempts. Steps to reproduce the problem: Not sure the above description is sufficient to get it again; it's the second time I come accross it, though (and getting back to a working status with the new gconf-registry stuff is not trivial, I think; last time I ended- up removing pretty everything in it). Actual Results: for(i=0;i<10;i++) crash_dialog(); Expected Results: panel start How often does this happen? only if I try to login... Additional Information: my home dir also contains Gnome 1.4 startup files. Debugging Information: Backtrace was generated from '/usr/bin/gnome-panel' (no debugging symbols found)...(no debugging symbols found)...[New Thread 8192 (LWP 1238)] 0x420ae169 in wait4 () from /lib/i686/libc.so.6

Fixed in a later release. This crash goes away if you avoid vertical panels for the time being. Not sure when Red Hat will issue an errata, but you could use Ximian's snapshot package as a replacement until they do. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 94625 ***
