Description Hema Seetharamaiah 2002-09-25 10:59:21 UTC
I did the following,

I added a right-edged panel and started adding all the applets available to
it. I noticed the following two things,

1. The orientation is not predictable. Fish orients itself vertically.
Whereas all other applets like mini-commander, cd-player applet,
stockticker, clock, gweather orient themselves horizontally.

Shouldnt all be of the same orientation?

2. The applets dont fit to the panel. The panel expands in width based on
the width of the widest applet - in my case, the stockticker.

And after this, the rest of the applets dont resize to fit to panel.

IMO, panel should not dynamically widen. The applets should fit into
whatever width the panel has been configured to.

I am attaching a screenshot to convey what I am trying to explain.

Hema:
Could you please open bugs against the applets in question that don't
resize properly.
Please make sure they have NOT been raised earlier.

Just wondering on couple points though.
1) Why would I require a workspace applet to orient horizontally on a
   vertical panel ?
I am not inputting anything, just clicking, so is the case with fish.

2) Would I like to have a mini-commander applet orient vertically ?
Probabaly no, since i would need to input vertically which would
not be so nice :)

So I guess the general principle would be that, the applets that need
some form of user input or those that provide some info (clock, gtick)
would be oriented horizontally. While those that work on a click(fish,
workspace switcher, etc) would be oriented vertically.

The only question that remains is of re-sizing, and as requested above
please open new bugs against the respective applets if they don't
exist.

Thanks.

Kevin, would like your inputs on this issue. And what would you
advice? Need separate bugs be created for individual applets?

Please let me know.

Kevin, I have moved the product to gnome-applets.

But isnt Panel - resizing still be an issue which panel may need to
resolve? Guess that may need to be a separate bug?

There is at least one bug filed for either stock-ticker or
mini-commander for this issue. Those applets aren't meant for
vertical panels so I don't think we should worry too much. It would be
very difficult to do vertical text for the stock-ticker for instance.

Hema: what Arvind says is correct.
