Sam: couple things:
*http://bugzilla.gnome.org/simple-dup-finder.cgi?bug_id=85932 suggests
that it is a dup. Very much a dup :) That page is an easy way to check
for dups.
*gnome 1.4 panel crashes get reassigned to gnome-core's panel
component, not gnome-panel. 
Thanks for helping out- it's much appreciated. Will be even more so
once you pick up the little details like this :) [They need to be on a
page somewhere... that's my fault.]
