GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 88498
Network applets break after IP change
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
If I log into GNOME2 on my laptop at home, do some work, then move the laptop to another network and obtain a new DHCP address, my mailcheck and weathercheck panel applets both state they can't connect to their respective servers. Normal apps (e.g. Evolution) continue to work without requiring a restart, but panel applets do not. One workaround I've found is to 'killall gnome-panel', after which the applets start working again. Obviously, this shouldn't be necessary :)
I've also found that if I do a full 'ifdown eth0; ifup eth0', the applets continue to work. It's only when I kill and restart 'pump -ieth0' that it causes problems.
Weird. And definitely annoying for laptop users.

Mark, that bug is pretty unrelated. I guess you got the wrong bug number :) Can we unmark it as a duplicate?
Sure, I got the wrong bug. Thanks for pointing it out :-)
I suppose it's still happening (I can't verify right now). mailcheck applet is now in gnome-applets, so moving the bug there.
Note that mailcheck connects differently than gweather/stock ticker. Both gweather/stock ticker use gnome vfs to connect and there's a bug open in the gnome-vfs module about this.
I might as well close this bug. It doesn't affect me any more, and as Mark says, there is already a bug fiiled (/fixed?) against gnome-vfs.
