You have been bitten by bug 77540, which is fairly common in the 1.4.0.4 release, but doesn't appear to affect more recent gnome releases. If at all possible, you should upgrade to the most recent stable gnome-core and gnome-libs. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 77540 ***
