Description Matt Lavin 2002-06-28 19:22:21 UTC
Package: gnome-panel
Severity: normal
Version: 2.0.1
Synopsis: Panel does not resize correctly when changing workspace switcher preferences
Bugzilla-Product: gnome-panel
Bugzilla-Component: Panel

Description:
Description of Problem:
I have a simple panel running along the bottom of my screen. It
contains only the running applications and the workspace switcher
applet. If I open the workspace switcher preferences dialog and check
the 'show workspace names in the switcher' option then the applet grows
to accommidate the needed space. When I uncheck the option the applet
does not resize back to the correct size, and I am left with wasted
space on the right side of the panel.

I don't really think this is a bug. The panel is designed to align
things from a point on the left apparently, and thus if you make an
applet larger and then smaller it moves left in the case where it is
on the right end.

However, the panel could be extended sometime in the future to check
if something is on the far right edge, and align it from the right if
it is. Even then, some people might not like this, since it would be
slightly confusing, so it would have to be an option. And even if it
were an option, it would be one for advanced users, and would probably
be placed in gconf only. (most users wouldn't understand "Align
applets on edge by point on edge".

This bug looks similar enough to bug 85959 (they both cover the fact
that the panel can leave odd gaps after applets are removed or change
size) that I'm going to mark it a duplicate.

Feel free to reopen if I'm missing some important qualitative
difference, here.
