GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 82241
menu right-click reorganization
Last modified: 2012-02-20 10:11:33 UTC
currently, right clicking on a laucher in an open Foot/Applications menu lists a bunch of options that could be better server through just drag 'n drop. "Add this launcher to panel" should be dropped, as you can just drag items to the panel to create a laucher. "Put in run dialog" should be dropped, as the Run Program dialog should just be able to accept dragged launchers as the application to run. "Entire Menu" should be made the right click menu of the menu itself. "Entire Menu/Add new item to this menu" should be replaced with "Edit This Menu...", which pops up a nautilus window for the selected menu directory.
cc'ing the usability people for their feedback.
Not all people can do dnd, everything should be possible without dnd. Plus some of these can be awkward (at least to me) to do with dnd, but are quick and easy with the right click menu.
I agree with alex. see bug 84555, which is nearly a dupe but not quite since it addresses this issue even deaper.
Created attachment 31280 [details] This is the shot of the icky behavior Here lies madness! 2 level context menus on 2 level menus :)
I think at least the menu should be split up... if you right click on a top level of the menu (such as Internet, or Multimedia, you should get the context menu with items "Add this as drawer to panel", "Add this as menu to panel", "Add new item to this menu", and "Properties". If you right click on a second level entry in the menu such as Evolution or gaim, you should get a context menu containing "Add this launcher to panel", "Remove this item", and properties. As an alternative to tha, after reading through Bug 84555 mentioned above, I think the menus should be consolodated. Having to right click a menu item 2 levels deep to then traverse a context menu that is 2 levels deep just seems wrong. In total there are only 7 items (unfortunately 2 have the same name, so one might be called "Edit this launcher" and the other could be called "category properties" or "menu properties".
You cannot right-click anymore in the application menu in GNOME 3.2 fallback mode. Closing as OBSOLETE.
