I opened emacs from the ssh session, using the local machine as the display target. emacs was started in the background with 'emacs &' I started another gnome-terminal (also started as a detached process) in the ssh session, again using my local machine as the X display target. gnome-terminal crashed after I tried to maximize the newly opened terminal window.
